Showreel Privacy Policy
Developer: VNCNT Labs · Effective date: October 17, 2026 · Version covered: 1.0 (free) · Contact: [email protected]
This policy covers the browser extension VNCNT Showreel: Tab Recorder with Auto-Zoom & Privacy Blur for Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. Showreel records a browser tab you choose and turns it into a polished video on your computer. Your recordings never leave your device, and VNCNT Labs never receives them or anything else you do with the extension. One thing to know up front: if you turn on live captions, your narration is transcribed by your browser's speech service, which is a cloud service run by Google (Chrome) or Microsoft (Edge). Section 3 explains this.
1. When it records and what it can access
Showreel records only after you press Record (in its toolbar popup or with Alt+Shift+R) and only the tab you started it on. The toolbar badge shows a timer while recording, and recording stops when you press Stop, close the tab, or reach the plan's length limit. It has no access to websites by default. When you start it, your browser gives it temporary access to that tab ("activeTab") and permission to capture that tab's picture and sound ("tabCapture").
While recording, Showreel runs two small scripts in that tab: the Privacy Shield, which blurs parts of the page you choose, and an interaction log, which notes where the pointer moves and when you click, scroll or type, so the editor can place zooms and redraw a smooth cursor. For typing it records only the time and the position of the field, never which keys you pressed. It does not read passwords, cookies or browsing history. If you turn on the optional Keep effects when I change sites mid-recording setting, your browser asks for permission to run on all sites, used only so these two scripts keep working if the recorded tab moves to another site during a recording. You can turn it off at any time.
2. Privacy Shield
The Shield finds email addresses, API keys and tokens, and card-number-like text on the page and blurs them, and also blurs elements you click on, remembering those choices for that website on your device. All matching runs inside the page on your device; the matched text is never stored or sent anywhere. The Shield assists you but can miss things, so always review a video before you share it.
3. Microphone narration and captions
- Narration (optional). If you turn on narration, your browser asks for microphone permission for the extension. Your voice is mixed into the recording on your device. The microphone is released when recording stops.
- Live captions (optional, off by default). Captions use your browser's built-in Web Speech API. In Google Chrome, this sends your narration audio to Google's speech servers and returns text; in Microsoft Edge, audio is processed by Microsoft's online speech service. That processing is governed by Google's or Microsoft's privacy policies, not ours. Showreel keeps the resulting caption text with the recording on your device. Leave captions off if you don't want this.
4. Stored on your device only
- Recordings: the video, the interaction log, caption text and your edits (zooms, trim, styles), kept in the extension's private browser storage until you delete them in the library. Exports are made on your computer with your browser's built-in video encoder and saved to your downloads folder.
- Settings: recording, cursor, background, caption and Shield preferences, and the per-site list of elements you chose to blur.
- Session state: which tab is being recorded, held in temporary browser session storage.
None of this is synced to us. Uninstalling the extension removes it (files you exported stay in your downloads).
5. Pro (not yet available)
Version 1.0 is free only. It has no purchase or license features and makes no network requests of its own. The only network traffic it can cause is the browser's own speech service when you turn on captions (section 3). When Pro launches, it will be sold through Lemon Squeezy, and activating it will send your license key and an instance name to Lemon Squeezy to check it. We will update this policy before that version is released.
6. Data sharing and selling
We do not collect, sell or transfer user data. We do not use any data for advertising, creditworthiness or lending, or for anything unrelated to recording and editing your videos.
7. Chrome Web Store Limited Use
The use of information received from browser extension APIs follows the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
8. Children
The extension is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children.
9. Security
The extension uses the "activeTab", "tabCapture", "scripting", "offscreen", "storage" and "unlimitedStorage" permissions, plus optional access to all sites only if you turn that setting on. It runs no remote code: all scripts, fonts and its video muxer (Mediabunny, MPL-2.0) are packaged. Its pages use a strict content security policy, and its in-page interface is isolated from the page.
10. Trademarks
Showreel is an independent product of VNCNT Labs. Google, Chrome and YouTube are trademarks of Google LLC. Microsoft and Edge are trademarks of Microsoft Corporation. They are mentioned only to describe compatibility.
11. Changes
If we change what the extension handles, we will update this page and the effective date before releasing that version.
